SchoolsT20CMYKDefending champions of the Coca-Cola Schools’ T20 Challenge, St. Stithian’s College from Johannesburg, started their title defence in Stellenbosch out with a six-run victory over Wynberg Boys’ High.

Saints reached 161/0 in their 20 allotted overs with their opening batsmen, Matthew Erasmus (77*) and Joshua Richards (68*), recording unbeaten half-centuries. Wynberg Boys’ High’s captain, Karl Vermeulen (65), was on his way to get his side in a promising position before being removed from the middle by Craig Meier (3/19).

Selborne College also got their tournament off to a winning start by beating Prestige College by 68 runs. Matt Dewar (62*) and Matthew Ferrant (57) weighed in with half-centuries.

The man of the match award went to Aiden van Wyk who removed six batsmen for a mere 13 runs in his four overs from the crease. Van Wyk’s bowling was the main reason that Prestige College only managed to reach 86 runs before being bundled out.

The other match of the first round between St. Andrews of Bloemfontein en Centurion from Pretoria was also a tense affair. Saints came out on top by eight runs mostly thanks to an allround performance by Gerald Coetzee. He added 42 runs with the bat and also got rid of three batsmen for a mere 11 runs.

He found support in the batting department from his captain, Garnett Tarr (31). The pick of Saints’ bowlers was Calvin King (4/25).
