NuusG EldoraigneHoërskool Pietersburg walked away with the bragging rights over Merensky after beating the visitors 38-26 in their clash of the locals in the SDC Noordvaal Cup Bowl division.

The home side got out of the blocks like a house on fire, putting the visitors under severe pressure and dominating the physical battle.

For Pietersburg it was inside centre, Wian Terblanche, who set the stage alight, finding cracks in the Merensky defence on a regular basis, getting his team on the front foot.

Terblanche linked up well with the man on his outside, Hanno van Zyl, as both men in the midfield managed to cross the whitewash to contribute a try a piece.

Upfront it was the man with the captain’s arm band, Dewan Gobey, who led from the front with an impressive performance, Gobey was seen all over the pitch as the second rower continuously put his body on the line for his team and ensuring front foot ball with his imposing ball caries.

The light blues looked shell shocked after the fiery start from the home side and couldn’t quite hit their straps early on but flyhalf, Byron Hendricks, kept his composure as he continued to succeed in his effort’s aiming at the posts. Hendricks’ good performance from the tee kept his side in the game as the youngster kept ticking over the scoreboard.

Waldie Haasbroek made his return from injury, coming of the bench. Haasbroek’s presence made a massive impact among the big men upfront, as the Craven week loose forward showed why he is so important too the light blues’ outfit.

The loss means that the light blues move down one spot to fourth place and will have to travel to Brakpan next week to face Die Anker in their semi-final.

Wesvalia ran rampant against Dr. Malan as the home side ran in 15 tries in their victory of 99-0. Junior Kuhn (hooker), Francois Dumond (openside flank), Teboho Sekonyela (right wing) all managed to contribute three tries each, scoring nine tries between the three of them. Wesvalia will now look forward too a home semi final against Eldoraigne next week.

Eldoraigne also put up a dominant display against Alberton in Pretoria, cementing their playoff spot with a victory of 67-12. The Pretoria based side made use of the game opening up as it fell right in their wheelhouse and allowed them to throw the ball around in an impressive display of what one might call Champaigne rugby. The Eldo’s focus will now shift to preparation as they look to overcome Wesvalia for the second time this season, this time away from home.

Die Anker are yet to be beaten, as the men from Brakpan got over the line comfortably by beating Potchefstroom Volkskool 43-13 in Potchefsroom on Saturday and remain favourites to be crowned champions of the Bowl Division.
