Kemp the star on day one of CSA Schools T20 Challenge

PSX 20200306 122640St Stithians College, Waterkloof and SACS are the only three teams who came out of the opening day of the 11th annual Cricket South Africa T20 Schools Challenge unscathed.

The defending champions, St Stithians College, defeated Queen’s High School and St Andrews of Bloemfontein in their two matches on the opening day. Captain, Jodi de Sousa (58), scored one of only two half-centuries on the opening day as he helped his side to a comfortable 56-run victory over St Andrews.

De Sousa shared an opening partnership of 77 runs with Reuben du Toit (38) which put their side in a commanding position. Du Toit also contributed 22 runs in his side’s six wicket victory over Queen’s during the morning’s matches.

Liam McCarthy (3/5) caused a lot of problems with his pace against Queen’s High, while Takunda Chanakira (3/16) was the pick of the bowlers against St Andrews.

Saints will face Waterkloof in an important Pool A match on Saturday. Klofies also defeated St Andrews and Queen’s High in their two opening matches.

If there was to be a Player of the Day named this honour would’ve probably belonged to SW Kemp of Waterkloof. He was the pick of his side’s bowling attack against St Andrews as he grabbed three wickets for a mere 14 runs.

In the afternoon’s match against Queen’s High he struck 59 runs which was the highest innings of the day. He also caused the most problems to Queen’s batting line-up as he took another three wickets for 27 runs.

Waterkloof’s captain, Simeon de Bruyn, also had a good day with some steady performances against St Andrews (37*) and Queen’s High (26 and 2/12). Hardus Coetzer also made two valuable contributions with the bat with this 26 runs against St Andrews and 28* against Queen’s.

SACS is on top of Pool B but won’t expect an easy match on Saturday morning as Kearsney College will be fighting to keep their hopes of making final alive.

SACS started their campaign in Pretoria off with an impressive 57-run victory over a very dangerous Grey High School outfit. Kai Curren (47) top-scoring for the side from Cape Town.

In their second game SACS cruised to a 75-run victory over Graeme College. Former Protea allrounder Lance Klusener’s son boasting with bowling figures og 2/14 in this victory.

Kearsney College’s Dean Gibbs (4/19) boasted the best bowling figures of the opening day as his side lost against Grey High School by 35 runs. Gibbs also added 19 runs with the bat in the losing battle.
