NewsGDewaldBrevisGarsfontein managed to come out on top against their old rivals, Affies in the Titans League on Saturday.

Affies won the toss and elected to bowl first. A decision that most certainly deemed to suit Garsfontein on home soil, as the Garsie-batsman laid down the law.

Reuben van Zyl was the main contributor as the opener pilled on the runs at a brisk pace. He was finally sent back to the pavilion with his score on 113 of only 78 deliveries.

His opening partner, Dumisani Motshene, also had a good day with the willow, contributing a mature and well-constructed 71 off 95 balls.

Just as the Affie bowlers, led by Heinrich Muller (3/70), started to make some good inroads, Eckard Struwig strode to the crease to swing the momentum back in his side’s favour, blasting 55 of only 28 deliveries to guide Garsfontein to a very imposing score of 369/9 in their allotted 50 overs.

The Affie batters followed the example set in the first innings as they too got off to a very good start with the bat. The opener, Lukas Janse van Rensburg showed his class with a wonderful knock of 106 at more than a run a ball having faced only 102 deliveries.

Van Rensburg was well supported by Divan de Villiers who contributed 40 runs of his own to go with his impressive bowling figures of 2/82. But the festivities were short-lived as Stefan van Staden (4/55) and Xander Venter (2/29) tore through the Affie batters to restrict the home side to only 306 all out, claiming a very impressive 66-run victory.

Hoërskool Centurion also got off to a good start claiming a solid victory of 25 runs over Prestige College away from home. Centurion won the toss and decided to have a bat first.

After a rocky start and a few early wickets by the impressive Teko Modiba (3/41) the visitors finally hit their straps as Divan van Tonder (73, 105b) and Rehan Lues (52, 47b) steadied the ship. Supported by a good knock of 24 of 61 balls by Anton Stassen they managed to work their way to a competitive first innings total of 224/8.

Still enjoying somewhat of the momentum, the men from Prestige looked in a comfortable position in their chase of 225 to win, with Modise Maloka laying the foundation with his 62 of 81.

Contributions by Lethabo Kunene (35, 28b) and Morati Lefhiedi (31, 36b) further helped the cause, but it was deemed not to be enough as Rehan Lues continued his momentum gained with the willow to claim impressive figures of 4/23.

Wouter Kielblok also walked away with figures of 3/46 as the pair claimed seven scalps between them to ensure a hard-fought victory.
