BLOEMFONTEIN. – The first day of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) National u13 tournament here belonged to the spin bowlers. All four of the bowlers whom managed to bag five-wicket hauls on the first day were spin bowlers.

The best bowling analysis of the day belonged to Sebastian van Rooyen of North West who dismissed five of Eastern Province’s batsman for a mere 22 runs. Eastern Province were bowled out for only 95 runs and lost to North West on the first innings.

Gauteng was in some initial trouble against Mpumalanga and was restricted to 186 runs in their first innings. Their spin bowler Mudiwah-Jonah Chankira however troubled Mpumalanga with his bowling as he got rid of five batsmen for only 27 runs.

The third best performance by a bowler belonged to Junior Snyman of Limpopo. His performance however could not prevent his side from losing the match on account of the first innings against Western Province. Snyman grabbed five wickets for 50 runs. What made his performance even more exceptional is that he is his team’s backup wicketkeeper.

Griqualand West, Mason Zacharia (5/51) is the fourth spinner who managed to bag five wickets. He got his fiver against South Western Districts. In total he bowled 20 overs of which six were maidens.

The hosts Free State just missed out on securing a victory against KwaZulu-Natal at Chevrolet Park. Free State managed to score 228 thanks to half-centuries by Garnett Tarr (77) and Brandon Callis (51*). Gerald Coetzee (37) also made a valuable contribution with the bat. He and Callis shared a 96-run partnership over the fourth wicket. KwaZulu-Natal Inland was stranded on 142/9 at the close of play with Free State only needing one wicket to secure a victory.

Matthew Montgomery of KwaZulu-Natal scored the only century of the first day in his side’s match against Easterns. His innings of 118 runs helped his side to 292/5 when they reached the forced declaration at 60 overs. Their score was the highest of the day.

Montgomery smashed 13 fours and two sixes in his innings at St. Andrews’ Vossies field. He and Caleb Pillay (42) shared a partnership of 121 runs over the third wicket. Joshua Brown (81*) was the destroyer for KwaZulu-Natal at the end of their innings. He faced a mere 50 deliveries in his innings.

Brown and Motngomery shared an 86-run partnership over the fourth wicket. Brown smashed 11 fours and two sixes on his way to his unbeaten half-century.
