Molefe, Fowler and Wessels set Khaya Majola Week alight
Gauteng’s SA Schools spin bowler, Kgaudise Molefe, was on top of his game as his side secured an outright victory against Border on the second day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Cape Town.
Molefe was honoured with the accolade as Coca-Cola Hero of the Day for his performance.
Molefe bowled right through both Border’s innings and got rid of seven batsmen conceding only 39 runs in the 23.3 overs he bowled. Border was knocked out for 66 runs in their first innings and could only muster 46 runs before losing their fifth wicket which secured the outright victory for Gauteng.
Molefe boasted bowling figures of 4/19 in the first innings, while removing three batsmen for a mere 20 runs in the second innings.
Gauteng only needed to bat once declaring their innings at 211/9 after valuable contributions by captain, Jacob Miltz (70) and Bryce Parsons (46).
The only century of the second day was scored by Free State’s Calvin Flanegan (110). He faced 99 deliveries in his innings against Mpumalanga and dispatched 13 of them past the boundary rope of which three was maximums.
Free State almost managed to secure an outright victory, but just couldn’t manage to pick up the last second innings wicket op Mpumalanga they needed. Flanegan received some valuable support from CP Klijhans (73) and Ruan Cronjé (33*).
The best bowling performance of the day belonged to Eastern Province’s off-spinner, Nicholas Fowler. He picked up seven wickets for a mere 37 runs his side’s victory over KwaZulu-Natal.
The spinner’s performance was the fifth best since 1994 at the tournament. His captain, Tristan Stubbs (69), followed up his century on the opening day with a solid half-century to strengthen his chances to be selected for the South African Schools’ side.
South Western District’s seam bowler Tyrique Wessels produced a unique performance to help his side from the jaws of defeat to a victory over Namibia. SWD had to defend only 104 runs and Namibia was with their score at 68/2 on their way to secure a victory on the first innings when Wessels stepped up to the plate.
Wessels rearranged Shaun Fouché’s (49) stumps and also removed another two batsmen, Matthew de Gouveia (5) and Dian Neethling (3), to finish with the outstanding figures of 3/0 in his six overs. All of them maidens. This also allowed Reagan Rhode (4/17) to help clean up the Namibian batting line-up.
What makes his performance even more remarkable that he was only the sixth change bowler on the day.
Hosts, Western Province, had to sweat a little bit to keep Northerns to a draw in their encounter. Northerns amassed the highest total of the week a massive 290/7 in their allotted 65 overs, mostly thanks to Ximus du Plooy (61*). He received some help thanks to contributions from Modiri Litheko (44), Musa Twala (33) and Sebastian van Rooyen (32).
Western Province reached 199/7 when play was called with Justin Broad (90) and Thando Ntini (31) playing vital roles with the bat in hand to keep Northerns to a draw.
