Kwaggas have impressive support team for 2014
The Kwaggas from Outeniqua in George was one of the top team in South Africa in 2013. The side’s coaching staff will be boosted by one of the best backline coaches in the country, Abre Minnie who moved back from Kimberley to George. Minnie coached the Griqualand West senior side in the Currie Cup as well as helped with the coaching of Noord-Kaap’s first XV. Minnie will be Outeniqua’s technical assistant.
The side’s head coach for 2014 is Pieter Cloete. Cloete, Martin Oosthuizen and Jacques Wolfaardt coached the side in 2013. Oosthuizen and Robert Gerber will assist with the coaching. Oosthuizen have coached Outeniqua’s first XV in 2004-05 and 2012-2014. Gerber played for South Western Districts. Cloete also coached South Western Districts Craven Week side from 2005 until 2008. The side was crowned unofficial champions at the 2008 edition of the tournament in Pretoria.
Besides Minnie the team also got former Springbok prop, Ian Hattingh as their scrum consultant. Hattingh matriculated at De Wet Nel THS in Kroonstad. Former Blue Bulles, SWD and Valke flyhalf Rynhard van As will assist the kickers, while Walter Lutcsh will take care of the conditioning.
The Kwaggas will play Boland Landbou, Garsfontein and Tranvalia at the Pukke Skouspel in Potchefstroom. The match against Garsfontein might the biggest challenge as Garsies is one of the up-and-coming powers in schoolboy rugby in South Africa. At Wildeklawer they will meet Grey College of Bloemfontein. After beating the side from the City of Roses last year at the Kearsney College Easter Festival this will be one of the top fixtures in the country for 2014. The Kwaggas also defeated Grey in 2004 under the captaincy of Jaco Colyn.
