Hat-trick of titles for SA u18 at the Capricorn 7’s in Windhoek
The South African u18 Sevens team once again had no match to retain their title as champions of the Capricorn Sevens tournament hosted in Windhoek, Namibia. The South Africans eased past Germany by 28-5 in the final of the tournament.
Saru might need to relook their participation at this tournament. Our national u18 team could gain more value from attending a tournament where they will be tested thoroughly than thrashing their opponents from start to finish.
Entering, for example, the annual Dubai Sevens’ u19 tournament will provide the team with more resistance. Budget constraints will, however, play a major role in the decision where the national team show-off their talents.
This is not to rain on the SA u18 Sevens parade, but it surely will aid their development as players more if they attended a tournament where they play against opposition that will be able to give them stiffer opposition.
Tiaan Pretorius of Paul Roos Gimnasium captained the SA u18-side to their third successive title in Windhoek. They cruised past the Barbarians (41-0), Zimbabwe (57-5) and Namibia (35-0) on the opening day in Windhoek.
On Saturday they also eased past Germany (54-5) who they also met in the final.
The South Africans almost wrote a world record behind their name during their final pool match against Botswana. They smashed their neighbours from up-north by 91-0. The biggest ever victory in sevens was recorded during the Commonwealth Games of 1998 when New Zealand defeated the Bahamas by 93-0.
The team was:
Tiaan Pretorius (Paul Roos Gimnasium, captain), Walter Visser (Ermelo), Siviwe Zondani (Grey High School), Janco Cloete (Grey College), Renzo du Plessis (Ben Vorster), Hlumelo Klaas (Grey High School), Latica Nela (Hilton College), Nico Steyn (Glenwood), Sacha Mngomezulu (Bishops), Henco van Wyk (Monument), Danvon Blood (Rondebosch Boys’ High), Curwin Gertse (Paarl Gimnasium), Javier Farmer (Paarl Boys’ High).
