Golden Lions have it tough on first day’s draw at Grant Khomo Week
The hosts of the 18th edition of the Grant Khomo Week (for u16 players), the Golden Lions, could not have asked for a tougher opening game to the week. The Lions will face the most successful side since the inaugural week back in 2003, Western Province, in the main match of the opening day at Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg.
This year’s week will take place from 22 to 26 June in the City of Gold. As per the last couple of years, it will be hosted in conjunction with the u13 Craven Week. The first Grant Khomo Week was also hosted in Johannesburg at the University of Johannesburg’s fields back in 2003.
Western Province has been crowned unofficial champions of the Grant Khomo Week for seven times since 2003. The team from the Western Cape also took the honours during last year’s tournament in White River by overpowering the Sharks by 34-10 in the main match.
The Sharks will face Eastern Province in their first match at the 2020-edition of the tournament, while the Free State could expect a bruising encounter against Border in their opening match.
The Blue Bulls will be facing South Western Districts in their opening encounter.
The hosts of the tournament, the Pumas, had a second team in attendance in 2019, but this practice makes way in 2020 for Western Province sending their second stringers. This is on par with the system in place at the u18 Craven Week where the Western Province XV proves to be more than competitive against the other unions.
