Christoffels stars in Day 2 of Cubs Week
The South African Universities’ opening batsman, Kirwin Christoffels (98) just missed out on recording a century on the second day of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) annual Cubs Week in Stellenbosch. Christoffels side the Chevrolet Warriors and their opposition the bizhub Highveld Lions’ match rained out after the former completed their innings.
Christoffels also recorded a solid 29 runs in his side’s first match against the Sunfoil Dolphins on the first day. He must be one of the contenders to make the South African under-19 side to the ICC u19 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates next month. He was supported well in the match against the Lions by Lloyd Brown (76) who represented the national u19-side last year while touring India. They shared a 98-run partnership over the third wicket.
Another national u19 player, Kagiso Rabada (2/44) had the best bowling figures for the Highveld Lions.
Three spin bowlers have put up their hands with good performances on the first two days of the tournament. Lance Roelfse (Warriors), Greg Oldfield (Sunfoil Dolphins) and Sine Ntshona (Chevrolet Knights) all gave the selectors food for thought.
Oldfield helped the Dolphins to a victory with his unbeaten 38 runs in his side’s total of 110/4 in their recalculated allotted 34 overs against the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras. The Cobras had to score 143 runs in 33 overs according to the Duckworth/Lewis method. The Dolphins won the match by 37 runs after the Cobras could only manage 73/7 in 22.4 when rain interrupted play for the final time.
The hosts’ South African Schools’ player, Clyde Fortuin (21) scored the most of his side’s runs.
The Knights’ spin bowlers Ntshona (3/27 in seven overs) and Sean Whitehead (1/17 in six overs) restricted the South African under-17 side to 124/7 before rain stopped play in this match at Pniel. For the national side their captain Andrew Rushmere (25) offered the most resistance.
The Unlimited Titans recorded a six wicket victory over Zimabwe in a match which was also affected by the rain. Their spin bowler, Leus du Plooy (2/27) was his side’s best bowler for a second match in a row.
