Camp Discovery to host first Champion of Champions tournament in 7’s Series
The first Champion of Champions tournament of the High Schools 7’s Series will be held at Camp Discovery just north of Pretoria on 20 and 21 October. This tournament promises to be the highlight of the series as the South African Schools champion will be crowned.
Five schools already qualified for the Champion of Champions tournament. They are Goudveld-Hoërskool of Welkom, Louis Botha of Bloemfontein, Hoërskool Rustenburg, Durban High School and Glenwood of Durban.
The sixth leg of the series will be hosted by Noordheuwel in Krugersdorp this Saturday. There are still six spots available during the six remaining legs of the High Schools 7’s Series. The rest of the teams to complete the 16 team Champion of Champions tournament will be wild card entries.
The series is organised by well-known sevens promotor Darryl Weir. In addition Camp Discovery will host and u13 and u15 tournament alongside the main event. The champions of the u15 tournament’s during the High Schools 7’s Series will also receive automatic invites.
“We at Camp Discovery are very excited to be associated with the return of the “Champion of Champions” 7’s tournament for High Schools in South Africa,” said Wouter van Deventer, chairman of Camp Discovery.
Camp Discovery has been involved with youth recreation and development programmes and quality sporting tournaments for the past 11 years. “We are convinced that it is appropriate to be involved with sevens rugby because of it being one of the fastest growing sports in the world, which is clearly reflected in having recently earned Olympic status.
“We would like to combine our unique and top-class facilities with the prestige of the Champions tournament, by adding value to what we know will be a unique 7’s experience, that both players and spectators will enjoy and remember,” said Van Deventer.
All the tournaments of the series are live streamed by Fanstream.co.za. Players are also identified by Travel and Sport during the series to be included in teams who will participate at the Dubai Sevens.
