School of Rugby Rankings – 18 April 2016
There were quite a few surprises over the weekend with Ben Vorster’s 34-19 victory over Jeppe High School for Boys’ on Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park) in Johannesburg perhaps being the biggest upset. The surprise victory for the team from Tzaneen ended Jeppe’s unbeaten record this season.
It also saw Ben Vorster jump from 27th from last week on School of Rugby’s rankings to position number 20. Jeppe slips to ninth. It is important to remember that our rankings only takes into account matches being played thus far in the season and we don’t do any projections as were we think teams will finish.
Other upsets includes Queen’s College ending Selborne College’s unbeaten status with a 33-29 victory on Reunion Day while HTS Daniel Pienaar from Uitenhage surprised Grey High School with 24-20. The team from Uitenhage lingers just outside our Top 30 at the moment.
Affies of Pretoria is still number one after beating Diamantveld of Kimberley convincingly by 64-17 in the Jacaranda City. Paarl Boys’ High extended their unbeaten run to 26 matches in a row with a 58-12 victory over Diocesan College (Bishops). Grey College of Bloemfontein defeated Louis Botha by 50-0 with 16 minutes left on the clock. South Africa’s premier rugby factory is currently in the third position on our rankings.
The clach between Affies and Grey College in Pretoria might just be the determining factor on who will finish on top of School of Rugby’s rankings for the 2016. The season is however still long. Wildeklawer will give us a good indication were the teams find themselves and the rankings might settle a bit more after the tournament.
Of the Top 10 schools only Glenwood and Jeppe won’t be in action next weekend at Wildeklawer in Kimberley. Glenwood will attend the annual Sanix Youth Invitational tournament in Japan.
Rondebosch Boys’ High is the only school to be excluded from our rankings at the moment as they’ve only played two matches against South African opposition thus far.
Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results. This rankings is not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibilty on reporting school rugby very seriously.
