Preview – Glenwood vs. Monument
In a Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools match in Durban on Saturday, Glenwood play host to Monument of Krugersdorp, two of South Africa’s best school sides this year.
In the recent FNB Top 20, Monument were ranked 11th, Glenwood 15th. The difference in standard and ability is negligible. In their 14 matches Glenwood have played against seven teams of Top 20 standard; in their 12 matches Monnas have played against five teams of Top 20 standard.
Glenwood had a slow start to the season , but then they were playing only top opposition. They lost heavily to Paarl Gim but more closely to Paul Roos, Drostdy, Garsfontein and Kearsney. When their fortunes started looking up they beat Boland Landbou, Paarl Boys’ High, Hilton and then last week in a magnificent match Maritzburg College.
Monnas, on the other hand, started off well with a win over Noord-Kaap but subsequently have lost to Centurion, the strong EG Jansen side (32-18) and then just 13-8 to Grey Bloem in a match they could just as well have won. Then last weekend they drew with the struggling KES side.
To judge from the KwaZulu Natal Craven representative sides, Glenwood are star-studded. They have nine players in the KwaZulu Natal Craven Week side – Kerron van Vuuren, Koos Tredoux, Ntokozo Vidima, Mzwandile Mazibuko, Jaco Coetzee, Sphamandla Ngcobo, Akona Nela, Morné Joubert and Corné Vermaak, back again from injury.
Glenwood and Monnas have met in each of the last three years. Glenwood won 26-5 in 2010 and 16-8 in 2011 while Monnas won 25-18 last year.
If the top schoolboy matches this season are anything to go by, this could be another great match and one too close to predict.
