Grey College would be cautious for history repeating itself against Grey High

Grey College could have probably eyed a comprehensive victory over their namesakes from Gqeberha, Grey High School if it wasn’t for the fact this is 2024.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Since the 1990’s Grey High School has only managed to beat Grey College five times.

Even more, foreshadowing is the fact Grey College have lost to the team from Gqeberha in 1994 (10-18), 2004 (14-17) and 2014 (20-27). So for anybody who is superstitious, this pattern will leave them with some sleepless nights before Saturday’s clash.

The home side will also be a bit more emotional as their matrics will jog onto their home field for one last time. College’s last two matches against Oakdale Landbou and Paul Roos Gimnasium will both be away from home.

Grey College will without a doubt take the field as favourites as four of their players Alzeadon Felix (flyhalf), Pieter van der Merwe (inside centre), AJ Meyer (lock) and Ethan Adams (outside centre), represented the South African Schools’ side earlier this year. Felix was also named the Player of the Tournament for the magic he produced during the Stadio Craven Week in Krugersdorp.

It helped the Free State to reach the prestigious main match at the tournament for the first time since 2011. Grey’s fullback, Heinz Stockenström, was the leading point scorer during the Craven Week as he amassed a total of 45 points.

Another two players Liam van Wyk (hooker) and Philip McLaren (scrumhalf) represented the SA Schools A-side.

Grey High School on the other hand would’ve preferred a better approach leading up to this clash.

The team from Gqeberha lost for a third year on a trot against Framesby (17-19) in their last encounter before packing for Bloemfontein. This would’ve left the side wounded.

The battle up-front between Liam van Wyk (Gey College) and Jon Hobson (Grey High) could be one of the highlights of the encounter. Also watch out for Grey College’s centre pairing of Van der Merwe and Adams.
