Western Province fall short of outright opening win
Western Province just missed out on an outright victory over their neighbours Boland on the first day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Durban. Western Province restricted Boland to a mere 46 in their first innings with Dayyaan Galiem (4/13) and Jay Stevens (2/13) causing most of the damage with the ball in hand.
Western Province declared their first innings at 125/6 with their captain Zubayr Hamza (35) the main contributor. Stevens grabbed two wickets for only six runs in Boland’s second innings. Boland was struggling at 14/3 with Western Province needing only two wickets more to secure an outright victory when play was stopped due to bad light.
Easterns and Namibia however managed to secure outright victories. Easterns’ victory came in their match against Limpopo with Lance Humprey (5/24) being the hero with his five-wicket haul. Humprey’s figures were the best of the opening day. The spin bowler was the main reason Limpopo was restricted to only 76 in their first innings. They also only managed 63/5 in their second innings.
Another two bowlers Tim Niemand (Border) and Sohail Mahmood (KwaZulu-Natal Inland) managed five-wicket hauls. The legbreak bowler, Mahmood grabbed five wickets to the cost of 64 runs, but it didn’t prevent his side from losing their match against Gauteng on the first innings. KwaZulu-Natal Inland managed only 61 runs as Nicholas Scholtz (3/7) and Kagiso Rabada (3/14) troubled the batsmen.
Niemand’s five wickets for 50 runs against Northerns completed the major milestones on the first day. Leus du Plooy (43) and Rivaldo Moonsamy (40) helped Northerns to reach 194 before being bowled out.
Namibia’s outright victory came against Griqualand West. The latter was restricted to 63 and 48/5 in their two innings. JJ Smit (4/12) was the main destroyer in Griquas’ first innings.
The best performance by a batsman belonged to Christopher Marrow (86*) for South Western Districts against Mpumalanga.
