Warriors beat Titans in titanic clash on third day of Cubs Week
STELLENBOSCH. – In undoubtedly the match of the day and the match of the Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week here the Chevrolet Warriors defeated the Unlimited Titans by six wickets.
A superb allround performance by Bradley Bopp of the Warriors secured his side the nail-biting victory. Bopp struck a six in the second last over to take his side past the target of 237 runs set by the Titans. Bopp scored an unbeaten 87 runs in which he also shown a lot of patience to get his team in the position to win the match. He and South African under-19 tourist Lloyd Brown (58) shared a 104-run partnership over the third wicket. Bopp was also his side’s best bowler on the day picking up three wickets at the cost of 48 runs.
The Titans scored 237/9 in their allotted 50 overs thanks to a partnership of 97 runs between Aiden Markram (51) and Tian Koekemoer (43) over the second wicket. Driaan Bruwer also made a valuable contribution adding an unbeaten 48 runs at the end.
The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras suffered a heavy defeat against the South African Week at the Van der Stel-field. A player from their own backyard, Dayyaan Galiem (4/13) of Rondebosch Boys’ High was the main destroyer for the national side.
The Cape Cobras was bundled out for a mere 58 runs. Galiem and Keith Dudgeon (2/15) had the hosts in trouble early on leaving them on 20/5 in their opening spell. The left-handed spin bowler, Stefan Klopper (3/18) also caused some damage to the Cape Cobras’ batting line-up. The South African u17-side reached the target in the 18th over with opening batsman, Grant Roelofsen (28*) the main contributor.
The Chevrolet Knights kept their chances to reach the final of the tournament alive with a comprehensive six wicket victory over the Sunfoil Dolphins. The opening bowlers of the Knights, Patrick Kruger (3/27) and Aiden Brooker (2/17) had the Dolphins in trouble early on with their total on 28/5.
The Dolphins’ innings was given some sort of substance by a last-wicket stand between Sibonela Makhanya (69) and Lwandisa Zuma (11*). They shared a 69-run partnership over the last wicket. Zuma joined Makhanya with the total on 75/9. Sachinta Galhenhage (2/18) picked up two wickets with his first over, while another spin bowler Sean Whitehead (1/18) bowled economically in his ten overs.
Hanco Olivier (37) and Pule Mokoena (25*) made the biggest contributions with the bat for the winning side. The spin bowler of the Dolphins, Sohail Mahmood picked up three wickets for 30 runs in his ten overs.
The South African under-19 player, Bradley Dial (77) struck his half-century against Zimbabwe of a mere 42 deliveries. Jayden Broodryk (36*) also made a contribution with the bat towards the bizhub Highveld Lions’ total of 247/9.
