Volkies meet Gimmies
It’s the land of Sarie Marais, the great mealiefields of the Western Transvaal on the banks of the Mooi River, the Transvaal’s oldest town.
And it is the second FNB Classic clashes in a town known as an educational and farming centre. Earlier this year Potchefstroom Boys’ High played HTS Potchefstroom. Matches like these provoke a great deal of interest, in the quiet and lively town.
There was earlier this season an FNB Classic Clash on the banks of the Mooi River – a different Moor River. That one was in KwaZulu Natal.
In 2012, after Volkies had ruled the roost for six consecutive years, Gimmies turned the table on them and won 24-16, They have just two back from last tear – Marchelle Hatting, a wing last year and a fullback this year, and lock Albert Lubbe. Volkies have just three back – fullback Ulrich Aspeling, outside centre DJ White and Dalton Viljoen.
Their seasons have been similar. They both play against strong opponents. Volkies have lost to Hugenote of Springs, a strong side, Garsfontein and Transvalia while they have beaten Klerksdorp, Driehoek and Noordheuwel.
Gimmies have lot to Florida and HTS Louis Botha and beaten Jeugland and Bastion.
They should be good opposition for each other.
The FNB Classic Clashes will take place this year at Gimmies.
