Smith and Momberg shine on the opening day of Grey Cricket Festival
Play was only possible in three of the six matches during the opening day of the annual Grey Cricket Festival in Bloemfontein. The City of Roses received some much-needed rain on Wednesday which caused most of the matches to be canceled.
Grey High Schools’ opening batsman Jade Smith (91*) continued his brilliant form with the bat as he helped the side from Port Elizabeth to an eight-wicket victory over St Andrews of Bloemfontein.
Smith was one of the top batsmen during the recent Cubs Week in Stellenbosch. He scored 250 runs at an average of 50 runs per innings during this prestigious week hosted by Cricket South Africa.
Saints reached 138/8 in their reduced allotted 35 overs thanks to contributions by Nicolaas Liebenberg (35) and Gerrit Badenhorst (20). Nicholas Keevy (3/19), who also represented the Warriors at the Cubs Week, was the pick of his side’s bowlers with his spin bowling.
King Edward VII managed to down Glenwood High School by 35 runs thanks to some aggressive batting by Zack Momberg (66). He faced only 44 deliveries in which he launched eight sixes.
In the only match that was played Northwood defeated Durban High School by two wickets. Dylan Ferreira (27*) got his side past the target with only three deliveries to spare.
