School of Rugby Rankings – 7 April 2015

By Hannes Nienaber , in Rugby | News , at 2015-04-07

SOR NuusPaarl Boys’ High grabs our first number one spot on School of Rugby’s Rankings for 2015 after good victories over Diamantveld, Monument and Garsfontein. The team from Paarl was one of the standout performers at the annual St. John’s College Easter Festival in Johannesburg.

The number one ranked team of 2014, Grey College, is also still unbeaten. Their 34-all draw against Diamantveld in their season opener is the only reason why they are not on top of the rankings. The side from Bloemfontein however finished the Kearsney College Easter Festival as the only undefeated side. It was also the first time since 2011 that they’ve managed to be victorious in each of their three matches at the tournament.

The Nelspruit Rhinos like Paarl Boys’ High and Paul Roos Gimnasium finished the St. John’s College Easter Festival unbeaten and occupy the third position well-deserved. The only reason the unbeaten, Paul Roos Gimnasium, is in the fifth spot and not higher is because one of their five matches this season was a runaway victory of 94-0 against Viadana of Italy. Matches against sides from outside South Africa is not used in the calculations for our rankings.

Our rankings is not official as we believe there can’t be any official rankings and this is just a nice discussion point over school rugby in South Africa. We are well aware that there are teams that have beaten a team higher up on our first rankings. On the system on how our rankings work teams are ranked according to their season in a whole at that specific point and we have experienced that the rankings sort itself out as the season progresses. A team like Maritzburg College’s ranking might seem a bit high as they lost against Hentie Cilliers, but their victories over Westville Boys’ High en Grey PE helped them to take the eighth spot.

The spots of Outeniqua and HTS Drostdy could also be a bit off as they only played two games each of which they both only managed one victory. Their victories however came against high-ranked teams, which accumalated more points for them.

Please note that we didn’t include Paarl Gimnasium in our rankings as they only played against Pietersburg in a 74-5 victory.
