School of Rugby Rankings – 29 August 2016

SOR NuusPaarl Boys’ High manage to top School of Rugby’s Rankings for a second year running by finishing another taxing season unbeaten. The team extended their unbeaten run to 39 victories on the trot.

Boishaai closest call during the season came against their old foe, Paarl Gimnasium, in the biggest derby in school rugby. Captain Salmaan Moerat and his troops won this encounter the narrowest of margins 26-25.

  • Grey College of Bloemfontein was crowned champions of the Kovsie competition’s Shimla-league on Saturday by narrowly defeating Welkom Gimnasium 43-42 in the final. Grey had a tough last two weeks in the season as they played five matches in 14 days.
  • Grey College’s second place on our rankings is well deserved with their only defeat coming against top placed side, Paarl Boys’ High (18-28). The match between the two side’s were also a lot closer than the scoreline suggests.
  • Paarl Gimnasium finished third after only suffering two defeats during their 17-match season. Gimmies first defeat came at the hands of the Beeld Trophy for Macro Schools champions, Garsfontein (13-15) in Pretoria. Gimmies other defeat was in their annual derby against Boishaai.
  • Affies also ended up just twice on the losing side. Both their defeats came in the same week on the last day of Wildeklawer (Monday) against Boishaai (25-29) and the Saturday against Grey College (29-53). The team from Pretoria had an impressive season if you take the one week out of the equation.

Welkom Gimnasium finished just outside the top ten in 11th after suffering only four defeats during the season. Two defeats came against second placed, Grey College (22-54) and (42-43), while they also lost against Noord-Kaap (32-34) and sixth placed Oakdale Landbou (15-20).

We must admit that outside of the Top 30 thinks get a little more murky, but we decided to post our Top 50 for the final rankings as with any criticism on the rankings will only get us closer to get a more trusted ranking system in future.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results. This rankings is not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibilty on reporting school rugby very seriously.
