SA u18 names strong team to defend title in Windhoek

NewsGJavierFarmerThe South African u18 sevens team that will defend its title as champions of the annual Capricorn International Sevens tournament in Windhoek, Namibia. 

The South Africans will once again arrive in Windhoek as the favourites to walk away with the title. 

They were crowned champions during the inaugural tournament back in 2017 when they defeated Namibia by 45-0. Last year the South Africans defeated Germany by 46-0 in the final to retain their title.

Tiaan Pretorius of Paul Roos Gimnasium is the only member of the extended training squad which was part of last year’s victorious side. Pretorius is the cousin of Blitzbok Kwagga Smith.

Two schools – Ben Vorster of Tzaneen and Grey High School of Port Elizabeth have two players each in the squad of 13 that will travel to Namibia. Ben Vorster’s Christiaan Smit has been one of his school’s outstanding performers in 2018, while Renzo du Plessis caught the eye of the national selectors early on making the Green Squad (u16) in 2018.

Grey High School’s Siviwe Zondani en Hlumelo Klaas will add to the pace of Javier Famer (Paarl Boys’ High) and Henco van Wyk (Monument). The latter is also the head boy of Monument in Krugersdorp. 

The SA u18 Sevens team is: 

Henco van Wyk (Monument), Janco Cloete (Grey College), Tiaan Pretorius (Paul Roos Gimnasium), Javier Farmer (Paarl Boys’ High), Sacha Mngomezulu (Diocesan College), Christiaan Smit (Ben Vorster), Hlumelo Klaas (Grey High School), Nico Steyn (Glenwood), Renzo du Plessis (Ben Vorster), Latica Nela (Hilton College), Siviwe Zondani (Grey High School), Danvon Blood (Rondebosch Boys’ High), Curwin Gertse (Paarl Gimnasium).
