Red Army wins last-minute humdinger against Jeppe

In what was one of the most anticipated matches of the day, Johannesburg was entertained to yet another close encounter by two of South Africa’s premier schools.

KES carried on their winning ways by securing an extremely tight 23-20 win over rivals Jeppe High School for Boys.

The opening try of the day came courtesy from the sort of maul that we are becoming accustomed to seeing from Jeppe. The Black and White, powered their way across the line with Kaleb Burger placing the ball down neatly to open the account. Dikarabela Moeketsi added to the Jeppe scoreline after breaking through the KES defense.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, winger Timi Oluwole, scored a much needed try to ensure that KES could claw their way back into the match. Oluwole was back in the middle of things by making a superb run and offloading to a hungry Ruan Van Rensburg who scored the second try.

Jeppe’s Exauce Kevani and Thulani Shabalala both scored fantastic tries to take the score to 20-16 with five minutes left on the clock.

In the final passage of play, KES created a huge overlap opportunity from a line-out which was easily gathered and was sent across the field where substitute winger and hero of the day Mbuso Methula snatched at the opportunity presented from Muyo and scored the final try of the match.

Fly half, Vusi Muyo the puppeteer was instrumental in pulling the strings throughout the match creating some space and distributing the ball and putting his team mates in good positions.

Kicking for poles separated these two sides with Jeppe missing two crucial kicks which cost them several points. Jeppe forward Joseph Zulu made a welcome return not having played since picking up an injury at Noord-Suid earlier in the season.

The Reds Field was packed with supporters from both sides, which provided an electric atmosphere all throughout the match. Yet another historic finish between these two famous schools.
