The Golden Lions have no intention of relinquishing their Academy Week title this year at Hoërskool Middelburg. That much is clear following the irresistible start the Gauteng outfit enjoyed against a severely wounded Griffons side.

The Lions ran in an astonishing 16 tries as they annihilated the Purple People Eaters by a massive margin of 108-14 in the main match of the first day. The assault was led by loose forwards, Ryno van der Westhuizen and captain, Grady Ngui, who both rushed in for a brace of tries.

Van der Westhuizen and Ngui, however, were not the only ones to cross the whitewash twice. The ever-impressive Ruan Genis, Samuel Smith and King Edward VII School fullback, Indibabale Mboniswa, all joined in on the fun, contributing another six tries between the three of them. Jaydon Viljoen enjoyed a memorable day from the tee. Having ample opportunities at goal, the Monument marksman slotted 14 of his 16 attempts at goal for a contribution of 28 points.

Whoever has aspirations of taking down the roaring Lions in their hunt for a third consecutive Academy Week title, most certainly have their work cut out.

Eastern Province ended the Sharks‘ run for a shot at the title with a closely contested 39-33 victory. Having to work hard in the second 35 minutes, EP hit their straps, scoring 26 points to the Sharks’ 12, to come back from 13-21 down at halftime to secure an opening victory.

Bulumko Kilani provided the necessary punch with his boot to help the side from the Eastern Cape across the line. He converted all four of his side’s tries and also succeeded with two important penalties, which finally proved the difference between the two sides.

In the main match on the Middies’ C-Field, the South Western Districts Eagles capped off the day’s action with a runaway victory of their own, smashing the Leopards 61-7. Openside flanker, Sirr Lourens, and right winger, Ruzano Stander, contributed four tries between the two of them, while Charles Volsoo converted eight of his side’s nine tries.

The Valke gave neighbours, Namibia, a chilly reception. The Red Devils outside centre, Dylan Jordaan, scored the umpteenth brace of the day to help the East Rand side to a comfortable 37-22 victory, which will see them square off with Griquas on Wednesday.
