Preview – Diocesan College vs. Rondebosch Boys’ High

Twice a year, every year, boys walk the 400 or so metres along Tullyallen Road to play a rugby match. It is a wonderful tradition.

They are the same sort of schools – same sort of boys, same sort of staffs, same sport of parents, same sort of aspirations, same sort of manners, but none of that stops them from getting stuck in on the rugby field, as well they should. Mercifully it is a wholesome passion and then you walk back the 400 or so metres, knowing there will be another one later.

Look back down the years as far as your experience takes you and try to pick the nasty incidents between the two schools. They hardly exist and so it is possible and in fact desirable to play two matches each year. There is no residue of acrimony.

There is added lustre this year as it has been chosen as a Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools and will be shown on television.

This one, at Bishops, the 183rd between the two schools, is the first for 2013, a year when Rondebosch look to have the upper hand.

Bishops have lost their last four matches in a row, seven altogether and a draw in 12 matches. But then, as they have always done, they play top opponents. So do Rondebosch. They have lost three and drawn one of their 10 matches.

Results against Common Opponents

Paul Roos: Bishops drew 22-22; Rondebosch lost 10-5
Paarl Gim: Bishops lost 24-3; Rondebosch lost 35-14
SACS: Bishops lost 22-5; Rondebosch won 41-18
Wynberg: Bishops lost 42-28; Rondebosch drew 10-10

Rondebosch look stronger.
Representative Players

Rondebosch also have more players chosen to represent Western Province teams. Three of their players have been chosen to go to Craven Week – fullback Khanyo Ngcukana and tighthead Brett Paulse – and two made the Western Province Academy Week side – scrumhalf Stef de Gouveia and loosehead Kyle White. Bishops has one in each side – eighthman Saud Abrahams for Craven Week and hooker Cuan Hablutzel for the Academy Week.

All of those are a consolation for Rondebosch and perhaps a concern for Bishops but on the day anything can happen. Just look at the 2011 results down below to see how things can fluctuate.

Rugby Programme and Venues

The Piley Rees Field is named for the legendary schoolmaster and rugby coach who had been a master at Bishops from 1922 to 1967. He died in 1975 and the field was named after him in 1983.

The fields on the Top Field – to the right as you come down the Avenue – take their names from what they were next to, The Avenue Field was and still is next to the Avenue. The Range was next to the shooting range before it was moved to the far side of the Oaks. Parallel and next to the Range is the Cemetery because it was next to the cemetery behind St Thomas’s Church, where the Astroturf now is. When the cemetery was deconsecrated the field was used for rugby and called the Graveyard.

The Fields outside of the school in the dip next to the river were once a farm. JW Lutgens acquired the farm in 1799 and sop that low-lying part was called Lutgensvale.
