Sanix2019Paul Roos Gimnasium bagged their second title as “world champions” on Sunday when they convincingly defeated St Peter’s College from Auckland, New Zealand by 52-5 in the final of the annual Sanix tournament in Japan.

The team from Stellenbosch has also been crowned champions of this prestigious tournament in 2015 when they defeated Brisbane Boys’ College of Australia by 35-3 in the final.

It was fitting that Paul Roos was South Africa’s representative during this year’s 20th edition of the tournament as they were the first SA attendees back in 2000 during the inaugural tournament. Paul Roos then lost to King’s School of New Zealand by 5-28 in the final.

Flyhalf, Kade Wolhuter, scored 74 points during the tournament as Paul Roos swept all opposition aside. Wolhuter had now scored 112 points so far this season.

Paul Roos booked their place in the final with a 41-21 victory over Waverley College of Australia. In the quarterfinal, they smashed Exeter College from England by 75-0. St Peter’s College, current New Zealand schools’ champions, had to work hard to book their place in the final against the Japanese outfit of Toin Gakuen (17-13).

Grey College (2001), Boland Landbou (2002) and Glenwood (2008, 2016) is the other South African schools that have managed to be crowned champions of the Sanix tournament.
