Paul Roos won the u15 tournament in 2022 and that group seems to have evolved into one of the favourites in the u17 competition this year after claiming the inaugural NWU Prestige Schools sevens tournament in Potchefstroom last weekend.
This year’s event promises endless action with the quality of the competing teams and the scale of the tournament meaning every game matters.
The home team won the u15 tournament in 2019 and looks like one of the favourites coming into this edition again with an unbeaten season for their u15 team in the regular season this year.
The reigning champs’ u15s have also gone unbeaten this year though, so expect an epic matchup if these two cross paths during the knockout round.
Both Paul Roos Gimnasium’s and Paarl Gimnasium’s u15 squads beat all their opponents this year, with the only draw coming when they faced each other.
There’s a lot of work to do before they can start worrying about the playoffs though, as there’s no guarantee of qualifying for the Cup knockout games.
Paul Roos shares a pool with Stellenberg, who are more than capable of causing an upset, and Swartland and Tableview, who could also surprise anyone on the day.
The Gimmies need to get through the visiting St Andrews College as well as Parel Vallei and Jan van Riebeeck.
Paarl Boys’ High are also in a tough group, Outeniqua has looked really strong in their centenary year and Paulus Joubert prides themselves on their skills in the quicker format of the game.
Saturday’s knockout games will be confirmed after the conclusion of the group stage on Friday.
