A derby win for Sundowns and a title fight for Highlands Park
Over the weekend, Mamelodi Sundowns delivered an outstanding performance in a Tshwane derby, while a win for Highlands Park underlined
It was a tough day at the office for Newtown High School during the KZN High Schools Football league against Maritzburg College ‘A’.
While it was a rough start for Newtown High School, Maritzburg College ‘A’ showed clear signs of dominance from the first minute of the game. The Maritzburg College ‘A’ moved the ball comfortably and took full advantage of the early lead in the first ten minutes of the game through a goal by Thando Hlope, who had a fantastic game, putting in a stellar performance.
Cool, calm and collected on the backline, Hlophe opened the net for Maritzburg College ‘A’ after a well-taken, beautiful corner kick. Newtown High School struggled heavily on set pieces, and that set them back as the opposition capitalised on that.
Malachi Momple scored a cracker outside the box, making it two goals to nil in favour of Maritzburg College as they went into the second half leading.
Coming into the second half of the game, Maritzburg College continued to put in a good performance despite Newtown High School challenging and searching for that opening goal. Their opposition proved to be too difficult to beat on the day.
Mazithi Qasha and Philasande Khuzwayo scored the last two goals of the game, putting an end to the game. Khuzwayo’s goal summed up a performance that was put by his side as they easily broke through the defence of Newtown High School by playing simple touches and passing the ball to the team.
Maritzburg College took all three points in the afternoon, and their next game for the league is on the 11th of May, where they will face Linpark at Barns. However, this upcoming weekend, they will be travelling to Kimberley, where they will participate in the soccer tournament at the 13th annual Wildeklawer Sporting event.
