Montagu hosts Charlie Hofmeyr, Robertson take on Langenhoven Gimnasium
Charlie Hofmeyr looks to return to winning ways when they travel to Montagu on Saturday.
The Charlies have looked unstoppable this season again, until they ran into Worcester Gimnasium last weekend, who managed to end their winning streak for the second year in a row with a 22-12 victory in which they prevented the team from Ceres from scoring a single try.
Charlies’ fullback, Lawrence Jantjies, scored all their points off the kicking tee in that match and has been instrumental to their success throughout the season. He will be one to watch this weekend.
They are still without their star flyhalf, Luan Giliomee, who is travelling back from Trinidad and Tobago where he earned a bronze medal as part of the SA U18 Sevens team at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.
They also take the field without their big grade 11 lock, Le Roux Groenewald, who has just undergone surgery on his knee and will be out of action for the rest of the season as well as their star flanker, Tyron Davids, who has also just come out of surgery on his nose.
Montagu have been experiencing a solid season themselves though, and will be looking forward to the opportunity to add another big name to their list of victories this year.
Last weekend the Montagu boys showed immense character in protecting their unbeaten record against Bredasdorp which they have held since 2010 in an epic 8-5 thriller.
The hosts struggled against Langenhoven Gimnasium, losing by 38-7, but showed grit the weekend before that to beat Overberg by 28-26.
Their lightning-quick winger, Liam Pekeur, has been one of their standout players and will also have a big role to play on Saturday.
Charlie Hofmeyr will want to build some momentum before their big inter-schools against Robertson next weekend.
Robertson will also be desperate for some game time, as their last two matches have been called off, first due to the weather, and then the taxi strikes.
So the Robertson boys will be itching to get on the field when they travel to Oudtshoorn to play Langenhoven Gimnasium on Saturday.
Their last match, on the 22nd of July, was a romp in the Winelands when they beat Hoërskool Stellenbosch by a massive 87-0.
Luke Davids (eighth man) and Mullan Burger (winger) both scored a hattrick in that match.
The hosts are no pushover though, and they are coming off a strong 47-10 victory over York High last weekend.
Their big eighth man, Charles Jacobs, looks to be at the top of his game at the moment, and their dynamic little scrumhalf, Jayden Arends, has been phenomenal with ball in hand and off the kicking tee.
