Maritzburg College cruise to comfortable win over Candies
It was a long day for the boys in red, white and green, today as the boys from Pietermaritzburg enjoyed a successful trip up to the highveld. The final score resulted in a 47-15 win for Maritzburg College.
The first-half was very much in the balance between the two teams, each not trying to give away too much possession to the other side. Both teams played some incredibly tough rugby.
Boys High made early inroads taking advantage of a penalty which was easily converted by flyhalf Kyle Hezlett striking the ball magnificently. It was flanker Stephen Adams who muscled his way through for the opening try of the match, the players recycling the ball well amongst themselves.
Maritzburg however recovered quickly and made a quick comeback scoring a try under the poles from captain Kuhle Mthimkhulu. Loose forward, Phiwayinkosi Kubheka showed his power and strength during the half making some important tackles to slow down the advancements made from Boys High. Winger Colm Reardon added to the score by scoring in the corner.
The score sat evenly at 12-8 with Maritzburg in front.
An animated team talk ensued among the Maritzburg side at halftime. Whatever was said by the coach, but clearly it had an impact as the game ran away from Boys High. Maritzburg applied some pressure by scoring several quick tries in succession. Hooker Elbert Mouton carried the ball over the line via a maul which was set-up by a well delivered line-out.
Man of the Match, Luyanda Kuene, ignited the spark for a flurry of tries with a strong run, which resulted in an off-load to Luke Du Toit, who scored comfortably under the poles and converted his third of four placement kicks for the day. Phiwayinkosi Kubheka and Rhett Quin both found their names on the scoreboard as the game was quickly drifting out of reach for the home team.
Boys High replacement flanker Ernst Van Rooyen, playing in the number twenty jersey had an impact scoring a try right in front of the old boys embankment where he received a roaring hand of applause for his effort. The passage of play was excellently set-up by Shaun Schurmann.
Overall it was a difficult day for Boys High, as Maritzburg won all but three matches across the age groups. Boys High will want to put this at the back of their minds and will need to bounce back stronger in their upcoming fixtures.
