As the rugby season in the Western Cape draws to a close, there were some action-packed derbies taking place across the region with many boys getting to don their school’s jersey for the last time.

DF Malan beat Hoërskool Bellville in their inter-schools by 27-24, thanks to the kicking boot of their flyhalf, Zander Enslin.

Enslin scored a try, two conversions and a crucial penalty goal as they beat their neighbours in a thrilling conclusion to their season.

In Ceres, Charlie Hofmeyr and Robertson ended with nothing to separate them at 19-all.

The clash between the Charlies and Robbies is quickly becoming one of the highlights on the yearly calendar. They produced an equally thrilling battle when they met in Robertson in 2022 with Charlie Hofmeyr edging the win with a single point by 35-34.

Bernardo Diedericks, Robertson’s flyhalf, and Luan Giliomee, his opposite number from Charlie Hofmeyr, have spent the last couple of weeks training together as part of SA u18 Sevens team that won bronze at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

They returned just in for the big derby and both played a huge part for their respective teams.

The home team had to rely on Giliomee’s boot for most of their points, with their only try coming through their lightning-quick winger, Matthew Syster.

Robertson had more success running the ball, and Diedericks only joined the game as a replacement later on, but he was tasked with the massive responsibility of converting their last try, in the final moments of the match, to secure the draw.

Esselenpark from Worcester and Langeberg Secondary from Robertson competed in their first inter-schools over the weekend at Boland Park with Esselenpark taking the spoils by 10-5 with a try in the 70th minute.

Luhandre Monaila came on as a replacement on the wing to win the match for his side after also delivering a man-of-the-match performance in the u19 B game earlier.

His scrumhalf, Shaan Jay Jacobs, was the standout performer in the main event as these two growing rugby programs wrote the first chapter in what has the potential to become another classic South African derby.

Langeberg has the benefit of drawing from the experience of the Boland Craven Week coach, John Booysen, and team manager, Francen September, while Esselenpark entrusts their team to Gherswon Gordon and Megan Wehr. Mr Wehr also managed the Boland Academy Week team, adding to the healthy competition between the sides.

Worcester Gimnasium closed out an outstanding season with a powerful 50-0 performance against Hermanus, with eight players getting over the line in their last game of the year.

The Faure Stadion in Paarl was busy for the third consecutive weekend as Paulus Joubert was victorious by 15-10 against Noorder-Paarl in the final Paarl derby of the season.

Curro Langebaan‘s vice-captain and lock, Leighton Damons, scored four tries as they gave Curro Durbanville a 70-0 hiding.

His flyhalf, Dequinne de Bruyn, could do no wrong and converted all 10 of his team’s tries.

Milnerton got their revenge over Melkbosstrand by 22-13.

Last year Melkbosstrand won a nailbiter by 16-15, but Milnerton, spearheaded by their lively inside centre, Frank Hitimana, got the better of their rivals this year.

Labori brought an end to their season in style on their home field with a 66-0 victory over Parow. This comes after they retained the NTT Cup against Paulus Joubert with a 37-3 victory last weekend.

Their inside centre, Xavier de Wee, has stood out all season, and he got over the line again on Saturday for one of their nine tries.

His little scrumhalf and vice-captain, Migael Brits, scored a brace to end the season on a high.
