Kwaggas and Nories in school rugby spectacle during Outeniqua’s Centenary Festival

The last quagga died in 1883, the Kwaggas of Hoërskool Outeniqua celebrates their centenary this year.

Long live the Kwaggas!

Outeniqua’s First XV will face Hoërskool Noordheuwel of Krugersdorp in the main match of their Centenary Festival in George on Saturday. All the matches will be live-streamed via SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

If the event could even get more special it will be the first time that the Kwaggas would make use of their new change room which was build by old boy Ryno Gerber (2004) and one of the first team’s former coaches Eugene Viviers.

Gerber played tighthead prop for the Kwaggas when they was crowned national champions during Media 24’s competition (big schools) back in 2004. Viviers coached the Kwaggas during the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

Outeniqua are without a doubt contenders to be counted among the top five schoolboy rugby teams for the 2023 season. The pressure of representing their school during its centenary will however also weigh heavy on this team.

The Kwaggas opened their season last week with a comfortable victory of 59-6 over Parel Vallei.

Their clash against Noordheuwel promises to be an exciting encounter as the visitors with players like JT Kapank (flyhalf), Coun-Lee Koekman (scrumhalf) and Marshall de Vos (centre) in the backline prefer to run the ball.

The Kwaggas got a star studded team but the danger men are without a doubt JT Strydom (fullback), Jay Jay Daters (wing), Dewald Gerber (flanker) and Ruan Swart (prop).

Strydom represented the South African Schools A-side in 2022, while Swart played for the SA Schools’ side.

The home side would like to entertain their fans, but a victory will almost the non-negotiable on this special day. Nories are without a doubt honoured to be playing in the main match, but this won’t keep them from trying to spoil Outeniqua’s party.

In the main curtain raiser, Oakdale Landbou from Riversdal, will face Hoërskool Waterkloof of Pretoria. The Klofies have a point to prove this season as they were not invited to this year’s edition of the Wildeklawer-tournament.

The visitors from Pretoria would want to keep an eye on Oakdale’s left winger, Therlow Prins. He is quite dangerous with the ball in hand and if given too much space.

Grey High School and the Hoërskool Stellenberg will face each other for the first time ever on a rugby field.

The Jade Brigade’s pack of forwards with Herman Lubbe (prop), Damon Perreira and Marco Ferreira (both flankers) will bring a proper physical onslaught to the match.
