The Dolphins have two heroes to thank for their four wicket victory over the Knights on the opening day of Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week in Stellenbosch.

Tyron Koen (83*) and Eathan Bosch (73*) joined forces over the seventh wicket for an unbeaten 140-run partnership to get their side home. When they joined forces in the middle their team was in deep trouble with their score at 80/6 with the Knights already getting a sniff of victory.

NewsG RaynardvanTonderThe Knights reached a defendable 216/7 in their allotted 50 overs thanks to contributions by Wihan Victor (44), Gerald Coetzee (34) and opening batsman Dilivio Ridgaard (32).

The first day of the tournament belonged to the bowlers with Tiaan du Plessis (6/30), Reabetswe Mokgoro (6/37) and Wesley Madhevere (5/20) all managing to record five-wicket hauls.

Du Plessis helped the Cape Cobras to beat Zimbabwe by 29 runs with his medium paced bowling. The Cobras managed only 151 before being bowled out thanks to the spin bowling of Madhevere.

Du Plessis removed the whole of Zimbabwe’s top order sending Jayden Schadendorf (13), Alistair Frost (0), Ryan Murray (10) and Milton Shumba (0) back to the lockers. It left Zimbabwe struggling at 33/4. He then came back for his second spell and also removed Dion Mazhawidza (12) and Oldreive Declan (0) in successive deliveries to end the match.

The South African u17 Invitational side was restricted to a mere 121 runs by the Lions with Mokgoro causing most of the damage with his medium pace deliveries.

The only century of the opening day was scored by Titans’ opening batsman Jarred Alder (114) against the Warriors. Alder was given a few chances by the Warriors field, but he helped his side reach 271/8 in their allotted overs.

The Titans won the match by 104 runs with Beyers Swanepoel (4/36) and Nkosinathi Msiza (3/40) who caused most of the damage with the ball in in hand to help secure the victory.
