Stellenberg continued to build on their recent good form and weathered a spirited effort from Bishops Diocesan College in Bellville on Saturday to come away with a gritty victory.

The win comes after an outstanding 26-22 win over Garsfontein at the Absa Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley last week, where they also came tantalisingly close to upsetting EG Jansen (17-19) in their second fixture. At Bishops, they showed fine character to outscore their southern suburbs rivals.

The victory also avenged a 7-22 defeat to Bishops on the Piley Rees last season, with their burly hooker, Almero Keizer, driving Stellies to success with a hattrick of tries.

The visitors appeared much improved from their last couple of outings, and they were rewarded for their hard work early on when Ben Koenig burst over to open the scoring on the wing.

The home team got their tally ticking through the boot of fullback Dehan Neethling before Keizer went over for three five-pointers to see Stellenberg take the honours. Wing Marco Staples added a late penalty conversion for good measure.

Bishops kept battering at Stellies’ defences, though, and Jordan Petersen and Rynard Gordon were able to make further inroads on the scoreboard to get them to within six points at the end.

It doesn’t get any easier for the proud team from the southern suburbs as they get ready to host a wounded Paarl Boys’ High next weekend.

The ‘Bosch boys represented their school with distinction on their home field, keeping the mighty challengers from Paarl within reach throughout the contest.

Freek de Kock opened the scoring for Gim with a brilliant counterattacking play out of his own half, but the momentum was still with the hosts. They threw everything they had at the Gimmie defenders, who remained resolute.

Paarl Gimnasium captain Kobus Blanckenberg broke through to send flyhalf Chandler Green over for their second try, but ‘Bosch hit back when Shakeel Abrahams went over in the corner after his big no. 8, Collin Paul Kemp, made the initial break.

Even without a couple of their regular starters, Hans Verster and co were able to turn over Wynberg Boys’ High on the Hawthornden Field to end Boland Landbou‘s run of bad luck away from home against their rivals that stretches as far back as 2012.

This weekend, however, the farmers had too much firepower, with Verster muscling over for 10 points and Henry Rudder and Sydney Blaauw also adding their names to the scoresheet.

Hugo Coetzee struck twice on the wing and Keenen Stoffels and Heaton Rice rounded off another dominant performance by the Maroon Machine.

Boland Landbou faces SACS next weekend, while Rondebosch takes a well-deserved break.

The biggest fixture on the horizon, however, takes place on the J.A. Kriel Field where Paarl Gimnasium tackles Paul Roos in a true battle of the giants, with both teams playing top rugby again this season.
