Grasshoppers grab a smash-and-grab victory over Welkom Gimnasium

KIMBERLEY. – Glenwood performed a proper smash-and-grab victory of 17-16 over Welkom Gimnasium in the opening match of the last day of the Absa Wildeklawer tournament here.
Fullback, Jaco Williams, slotted a penalty with time already something of the past to break the team from Welkom’s hearts.
Welkom Gimnasium enjoyed a comfortable lead of 16-7 at the break after playing some good rugby. Scrumhalf, Julian Samuels, as well as fullback, Naylen Goeda, keeping the Grasshoppers defenders busy.
Glenwood’s Williams scored just before the break to keep his side in the contest. In the second half the visitors from Durban found their rhythm and managed to claw back to get within reach of grabbing the victory.
Which they then grabbed via Williams penalty. For the Grassshoppers it was the outside centre, Johandre van Rooyen, and lock Layhtan Sheehan that could feel more than happy with their performances on the day.
Oakdale Landbou secured a well-deserved 18-5 victory over Dr. EG Jansen from Boksburg.
The team from Riversdal’s inside centre, Kurt Coetzee, produced a solid performance. He scored one of his side’s two tries and kept the scoreboard ticking over in the second-half with two penalties.
