Good day for the Paarl schools as they secure victories over the Southern Suburbs opponents
Luca Bakkes was in devastating form for Paarl Gimnasium as they smashed SACS by 66-13 in their annual clash in Western Province’s Premier Division. Bakkes crossed the try-line four times to help his side to a comfortable victory.
It was his return match after sitting out for a couple of weeks due to injury. Dean Crouse (flank) and centre Janeil Losper also produced some excellent performances for the team of Paarl.
Paarl Boys’ High managed to defeat Wynberg Boys’ High by 42-24 in their encounter. Boishaai led 14-10 at the break before shifting gear in the second half. Ther flyhalf, Thurlon Williams, once again boasted a 100% kicking record from the tee converting all six of his side’s tries.
Boland Landbou managed a little upset as they came out on top by 14-7 against Bishops at Piley Rees.
Three weeks ago the team from Bishops was the only Top 20 school team left in the country with an unbeaten record. Since then the side has suffered three successive defeats against Wynberg Boys’ High (14-20) and Paarl Boys’ High (7-29). Bishops’ last victory was against SACS (34-0) when their fans were accused of throwing coins at the players from the opposing side which was seen as elitist behaviour by the prestigious private school.
Bishops played against Boland Landbou without their talisman and inside centre, Bruce Sherwood, who is still injured. The Western Province selectors are giving both him and Paul Roos’ outside centre, Jurenzo Julius, the opportunity to recover from their injuries before naming their final squad for the Craven Week.
This year’s Craven Week is hosted by Rondebosch Boys’ High in Cape Town from 3 to 9 July. It will be the first time since 1967 that the Mother City will host this prestigious schools’ rugby festival.
Rondebosch Boys’ High managed to defeat Paul Roos Gimnasium for the first time since 2003 on their home turf in Cape Town. Rondebosch walked from the pitch victorious by 24 to 12. The visitors from Stellenbosch lead by 12-7 at the break, but could nog manage to add any extra points in the second half.
