The Central Gauteng Lions continued their dominance at the annual Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week by being victorious in the main match of the prestigious tournament against Western Province at Newlands in Cape Town.

This was the union’s fifth time in the last decade that it has managed to come out on top in the main match of the week. Their hero at Newlands was opening batsman Cameron Shekleton (137) who recorded the highest innings of the week with his century.

Gauteng’s spin bowler Kgaudise Molefe (4/28) was the pick of the bowling. He finished the week as the leading wicket-taker by grabbing 21 wickets at an outstanding average of eight runs per victim.

Besides Shekleton’s heroics with the bat another four batsmen Matthew Montgomery (KwaZulu-Natal), Matt Dewar (Border), Luke Beaufort (Eastern Province) and Graeme Bouwer (Mpumalanga) managed to reach triple figures to finish their tournament on a high.

Beaufort (106) helped Eastern Province to beat Free State by 22 runs. Tristan Stubbs (46) also weighed in to finish the week as the leading run-scorer with 287 runs at an average of 71.8 per innings.

Matthew Montgomery (104) and Prealin Naidu (5/45) both played influential roles as KwaZulu-Natal defeated their neighbours KwaZulu-Natal Inland by 36 runs.

Graeme Bouwer’s (104) helped Mpumalanga to a three-wicket victory over North West. Border’s Matt Dewar (102) managed to convert an innings after getting starts is most of his innings earlier in the week. His century helped Border secure a seven run victory over Namibia at Langa.

Van Zyl Smith (55) and Saad Shabbir (55) shared an opening partnership of 105 runs

Northern Cape’s, Mason Zacharea (61) and Garyn Weyers (42), shared a 95-run partnership over the eighth wicket to help their side from 65/7 to be able to finish their innings at a more respectable 188 runs.

This also enabled Northern Cape to bag their second victory of the week by defeating Limpopo by 79 runs. Not even a five-wicket haul by Sello Malatji (5/38) could help Limpopo to what would’ve been their first victory at this year’s tournament.

Northern Cape’s Stephan de Klerk (4/15), Weyers (3/20) and Juan Mpofu (3/22) also bowled really well to help secure the victory.
