Gauteng has formidable squad for Khaya Majola Week
If a team want to be reach the main match of the annual Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Port Elizabeth in December and be victorious in it, they will have to get past Gauteng first. The national u19 tournament will be held from 16 to 21 December in the Windy City.
Gauteng and Western Province contested the last three main matches of the Khaya Majola Week. The team from Johannesburg will aim to finish the tournament unbeaten for the third consecutive year. In 2013 at the Smith Oval of Kearsney College just outside Durban it was Protea test debutant, Kagiso Rabada, who help secure a two wicket victory over Western Province with only seven deliveries remaining.
Rabada (35*) and Jayden Broodryk (38*) was the heroes for Gauteng. Rabada who made his test debut for South Africa in the first test against India which is being played in Mohali from Wednesday struck three sixes in his innings.
There is no less than five players in Gauteng’s team for the 2015 edition of the tournament who already represented the South African u19-side against Bangladesh earlier this year. They are Tony de Zorzi, Brandon Glover, Conor McKerr, Wiaan Mulder and Liam Smith. De Zorzi captained the national side in the home series.
While another player Shane Dadswell was in destructive form with the bat at the annual Michaelmas Week in Pietermaritzburg. He scored 356 runs for his school side, King Edward VII, during their four games. Glover and McKerr will form most likely the most exciting and dangerous opening bowling partnership in Port Elizabeth. The bowling attack will further be strengthened by Chad Claassen who was one of the top bowlers at Cricket South Africa’s national u17-week in Johannesburg last year.
If supporters are worried about the hunger of these already accomplished cricket players at schools’ level there are nothing to worry about. All of the players in the Gauteng team has yet to earn a SA Schools’ cap.
Gauteng will start their campaign in Port Elizabeth against the Free State in a time-cricket match. Their second encounter will be against KwaZulu-Natal Inland in the same format. On day three they will meet Boland and Easterns in Twenty/20 matches.
The team is:
Chad Claassen (St David’s), Shane Dadswell, Tony de Zorzi (albei King Edward VII), Brandon Glover (St. Stithian’s College), Michael Mahlaba (St Martin’s College), Wandile Makwetu (St. Stithian’s College), Conor McKerr (St. John’s College), Wiaan Mulder (St. Stithian’s College), Linaldo Phillips (Noordheuwel), Farhaan Sayanvala (St. John’s College), Liam Smith (King Edward VII), Katlego Thena (Jeppe Boys’ High), Ricardo Vasconencelos (St. Stithian’s College).
