The front-runners in the girls’ section of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament were quickly revealed on the opening day in Cape Town on Wednesday.

A total of 12 teams picked up two wins each, including Middelburg, DF Malan, Hoërskool Nelspruit, Paarl Gimnasium, Fairmont High, Somerset College, Stellenberg, Rustenburg Girls’, Outeniqua, Penryn College, Northcliff High, and Namibia’s Windhoek Gymnasium.

They will all be aiming to secure their places in the playoffs after Thursday’s matches.

The annual tournament, which is hosted at eight different venues, lived up to the opening day hype, with some interesting results being produced, including a couple of shocks.

Last year’s winners, Monument High School, who were drawn in Pool G, found the going tricky, winning one match and drawing their second fixture at the Rustenburg Astroturf.

They beat Belville High School 2-0, with Keila Meyer and Hannah Smyth getting onto the scoresheet, but they were then held to a 0-0 draw by Kingswood College. On Thursday, Monnas face Stellenbosch High School and Wynberg Girls’.

East London’s Hudson Park High, despite a win and a loss, will feel they’re still in with a shot at finishing first in their pool.

Jordyn Wilson struck four times in their opening encounter, a 6-0 drubbing of Hugenote, which also included goals from Inathi Lubelwana and Busiwe Mayekiso.

Next time out, though, they went down 1-3 to Middelburg.

Woodridge College lies second in Pool B, while Stirling High School is third in Pool C. They’ll be aiming to make Thursday moving day.

Stirling goes up against Rustenburg Girls’ and St George’s Diocesan School, while Woodridge battles DF Malan and Pro-Ed Akademie.

With playoff places on the line, all-out goal-scoring action is the forecast for day two.
