Sunday’s action in the u16 boys’ section of the Schools Water Polo South Africa (SWPSA) Inter-Provincial Tournament, taking place in Johannesburg, was highlighted by a couple of games involving Northerns, who challenged two of the big guns but, eventually, came up short.

They stretched Central Gauteng A to the limit, with the home side eventually sneaking a 5-4 win and then gave a good account of themselves in a 6-12 loss to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). KZN, also, blanked Northerns B 16-0.

Western Province A won by nine goals against Buffalo City, 13-4, with James Swart scoring five times.

They also swamped Zimbabwe 21-3. Kieran Bennewith led the way in that big win, firing seven goals into the back of the Zimbabwean net.

Western Province B picked up two wins, too, outplaying Zimbabwe 15-2 and overpowering Central Gauteng B 14-6 in a key test of the provinces’ B sides.

u16 Girls

In a big showdown in the girls’ u16 competition, at Kingsmead College, Central Gauteng A held off KwaZulu-Natal, claiming a hard-fought 9-8 victory. They also opened proceedings with a 9-4 defeat of Eden Districts.

Western Province A also went two for two. They downed Buffalo City 11-4 but found Central Gauteng B a tough nut to crack and had to settle for a battling 8-5 win.

In an Eastern Cape rivalry clash, Buffalo City got by Nelson Mandela Bay 5-4.
