Rondebosch Boys’ High look to follow up their last-minute 20-16 victory over their rivals Wynberg Boys’ High last weekend when they face a wounded Paarl Boys’ High team this weekend.

Boishaai also managed to beat Wynberg (33-29) they met two weeks ago, saving the win with a try in the final play, but the Paarl team had to bend the knee to Paul Roos Gimnasium last weekend (35-17), losing to their rivals from Stellenbosch at home for the first time in 20 years.

The visitors are definitely the stronger side on paper, having put in some really impressive performances already this season.

They’ve been the standout team at a number of festivals this year, winning both games at the North/South in Pretoria against Jeppe (43-21) and the hosts, Affies (36-19), coming out on top in all three games at the KES Easter Festival against Selborne (48-5), Northwood (29-7) and the hosts, King Edward VII (10-8) and beating Glenwood (35-13) and Helpmekaar (15-10) at the Absa Wildeklawer festival in Kimberley.

This intense schedule has seen the juggernaut from Paarl trip up a couple of times though, as Hoërskool Durbanville beat them 26-25 at the beginning of the season, Oakdale Landbou got the better of them with 20-17 on the farm, and then they lost out, despite a valiant effort, against Grey College, 39-30.

This last defeat against Paul Roos will have been tough to swallow, and Rondebosch needs to be wary of Boishaai using this game to make a statement.

Rondebosch have already proven that they can hold their own this season though, and it was only last year when they upset Boishaai in Paarl, winning 21-19.

The home team are unfortunately without the services of their captain, Polite Phiri (flanker), Alutha Wesi moves from centre to cover his position at the side of the scrum. Matthew Malherbe comes in at centre.

The visitors have also been forced to make a couple of changes, while their dangerous backline remains intact from the previous weekend, Divan Fuller moves to the back of the scrum in the place of Douw Wessels, covering the no. 8 position, while Chris Nel starts at flanker.

Their big prop Alfie Holm also moves to loosehead and Evan Kotze (prop) and Dewald Scheepers (hooker) replace Michael Pretorius and HB Odendaal to complete the front row.

Stellenberg have had a tough season so far, but they’ve shown glimpses of their potential in games like the victories over Maritzburg (36-24) and Helpmekaar (22-20) and will hope to find some form when they take on Parel Vallei.

Their captain and stalwart flanker, Damon Pereira, has unfortunately been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.

Alex Schoeman takes his place on the side of the scrum this weekend and Corné Bruwer (lock) takes over the captain’s responsibilities.

Parel Vallei are also in desperate need of another win though, having had a tough season themselves, despite an impressive performance against Frikkie Meyer at the Rolyn Bergsig tournament in Rustenburg, where they managed to secure a 15-all draw against the team from Thabazimbi.
