Affies crowned ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament champions

Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) clinched the ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament on Sunday in Bloemfontein with a battling 14-11 victory over Jeppe High School for Boys.

Affies, beaten in the final in the previous two years by Selborne College, was desperate to go all the way on this occasion and make it third time lucky.

They made a good start, scoring the first goal of the contest, but Jeppe quickly responded. By the end of the first chukka, it was 2-2.

Coach Lucky Letshabo‘s Jeppe side, then, hit the front, striking twice to open up a 4-2 advantage. It didn’t last long as Affies fought their way back and levelled.

At 5-5, Jeppe had an opportunity to hit the front, but they were denied by the Affies’ netminder.

Then, for the first time since the first chukka, Affies snatched the lead. Goals, suddenly, began to rain down. At the end of the third chukka, the Pretoria school had one hand on the trophy, leading 11-8.

With typical grit, Jeppe kept fighting until the end. They shared the honours in the last chukka, with both teams netting three times, but that left Affies the champions by a 14-11 margin.

In a high-scoring battle for third place, Northwood outlasted Reddam House Constantia 17-13, while Grey High School ended fifth after a second win over Maritzburg College, beating the KZN side 10-6. They had beaten them 14-6 earlier in the tournament.

Pretoria Boys High School (PBHS) doubled up Stirling High’s score, recording a 10-5 win to place seventh. Glenwood House took ninth place after a hard-fought 11-9 victory over the hosts, Grey College, and Paarl Boys’ High enjoyed a 23-3 romp in their last outing against the Grey College 2nd team.
