“As iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another”. Both Wynberg Boys’ High and Rondebosch Boys’ High will feel better prepared for the Wildeklawer T20 after their double-header on the weekend. Photo: Rondebosch Boys’ Cricket on Instagram.

In preparation for the Wildeklawer T20, the former Westvaal Noord/Suid Tournament, rivals Wynberg Boys’ High and Rondebosch Boys’ High faced off in two T20 fixtures over the weekend and shared the spoils. Both matches were played on Wynberg’s Jacques Kallis Oval.

Wynberg Boys’ High vs Rondebosch Boys’ High (T20, Saturday)

Wynberg won the toss on Saturday, but ‘Bosch won the match. The hosts chose to field first, while the visitors delivered a fine batting performance to win the contest by 38 runs.

Daniel Bosman often enters after the fall of the first or second wicket, but he shined as an opener for Rondebosch on Saturday, scoring a scintillating 78 runs off 49 deliveries, lighting the ball on fire for his six fours and four sixes.

Down the middle order, Janko Webb struck a four and blasted two sixes in his unbeaten 31 off 26, while Tyler Heyns weighed in with 31 off 21, which included three fours and a maximum.

After 20 overs, Rondebosch had posted a large total of 192/4. The best of the Wynberg bowlers was Ihsan Khan, who claimed 2/37 from four overs.

The hosts suffered an early setback when Storme van Rooyen was dismissed for a duck, LBW to Timothy Short. With Van Rooyen’s exit, Qaeed Shaik came in at number three and combined with Muhammad Ameen Schroeder to mount a challenge to ‘Bosch‘s big total.

Schroeder chipped in with 31 off 27, collecting three fours and a six, before losing his wicket, while Shaik produced an entertaining innings, scoring 62 off 43, which featured an impressive five sixes and two fours.

Down the middle order, Matthew Saunders and Chad Campbell contributed 26 and 24 respectively, but Wynberg came up short, tallying 154/6 after 20 overs.

Schalk Fourie took 2/30 in four overs, while Short and Raaid Davids both picked up 1/30 from their four.

Wynberg Boys’ High vs Rondebosch Boys’ High (20-over, Sunday)

On Sunday, in a reversal of the previous day’s narrative, Rondebosch won the toss, but Wynberg won the match. ‘Bosch opted to bowl first but the home side batted brilliantly to win the game by 11 runs.

Opener Matthew Saunders knocked 50 off 43, walloping seven fours and a six, while Storme van Rooyen, in at three, added a quick 30 off 20.

All-rounder Michail Tarentaal entered the fray at the fall of the third wicket and the runs continued to flow at the back of the innings as he launched three fours and two sixes in a two-run-a-ball unbeaten 44 off 22.

Other than picking up a wicket every now and then, the ‘Bosch bowlers were under the pump as Wynberg ended their innings on 169/4.

U15A talent, Ethan De Heer Kloots was sent on as an opener in his debut for the Rondebosch First XI. With massive pressure on his young shoulders, De Heer Kloots stood tall, smashing six sixes and eight fours in a superb 81 off only 47 deliveries.

While the debutant provided an ideal platform for his side, his teammates didn’t accept the invitation he laid on for them and failed to offer him much support, which was ‘Bosch’s downfall.

Joshua Prince led the Wynberg attack, picking up 3/27, while Ihsan Khan returned a useful 2/23, and Michael Tarentaal and Fawaaz Hendricks played their part with 2/27 each.

With only two balls remaining in their innings, Rondebosch was dismissed for 158.
