Graeme College claimed the bragging rights in Makhanda with a win over their local rivals, Kingswood College, on Saturday.

On the Somerset Field, Graeme bowled well up front to limit the visitors to 39/3 before Jarred Botha and Chris Zimmerman dug in their heels to give the Kingswood total a boost.

Botha spent 82 balls in the middle, providing good support to Zimmerman, who carved out an unbeaten 54 runs.

The remainder of the batting lineup, however, struggled to come to terms with the Graeme bowling, which gave up less than three runs per over in restricting Kingswood to 171 all out after 59 overs.

Graeme’s batsmen then rode out an initial onslaught from the visitors’ new ball bowlers as they patiently set about pursuing the victory target.

That conservative approach, however, meant that when Luphelo Mdyesha came to the crease, as the hosts’ fifth batsman, there was still a long way to go from 58/3.

Mdyesha, though, gave the innings the impetus it needed, scoring 46 from 56 balls, before David London caught him in front of the wicket.

Ryan Stobbs added a quick 20 runs in the middle order, which included four boundaries, to put Ashton Williams into a position to see Graeme to victory.

Meanwhile, Pearson and Woodridge College battled it out in a time-format game, with Pearson outmuscling their opponents to record a win on the first innings.

Bowling first, Cayden Wilson spearheaded a relentless Pearson attack, taking five wickets, as Woodridge were dismissed for 131 runs.

The Gangat brothers, Esa and Sulaymaan, combined to pick off the remaining batsmen to put their side on the front foot.

Captain, Esa Gangat, with 66, then led his side to exceed the Woodridge total by 112 runs.

When the challengers returned to the crease for their second innings, young Sulaymaan Gangat continued piling on the pressure, snaring two more wickets, to boost his tally for the day to five.

Time ran out before Pearson could work through their opponents’ lineup for a second time, but they had established a clear-cut victory on the first innings.

St Andrew’s College and Selborne College drew their match, with both sides posting high totals and making the opposition’s bowlers toil hard.

St Andrew’s won the toss and decided to send Selborne out to field first. William Beamish and Rhys Wiblin then combined for an opening partnership of 133 runs before Adam Rogers removed Beamish.

Rogers later got rid of Wiblin, as well, to take the sting out of the home team’s attack, while Tré Gilbert ripped through the middle order to take four wickets.

Selborne’s reply started shakily, as they stuttered to 26/2, but Jacques van der Merwe and Gilbert turned the tables on the hosts with a healthy 139-run partnership.

Van der Merwe came tantalisingly close to reaching a century, missing out on the milestone by only a single run, when Beamish trapped him LBW.

Gilbert was run out for 67, but the visitors were sitting pretty at 193/4 by that point. A further unbeaten 64 runs by Waedon Plaatjies saw them close in on their target, but the rate of play had slowed throughout the day and the game ended without a winner.

During the week, Selborne turned in dominant performances in big wins over Stirling and Cambridge by large margins. Gilbert and Plaatjies were standout performers in those contests, too.

Logan Fleetwood knocked over 4/7 as Framesby added another impressive victory to their record, beating Nico Malan by seven wickets.

Hanro van Jaarsveld then scored 53 not out to see Framesby over the line in only 23 overs.
