Piketberg triumph in Vredendal and Jantjies stars for Charlie Hofmeyr
On a weekend when the fixture list was pruned by the weather in the Western Cape, the matches that did take place provided enough action to keep fans of South African schoolboy rugby content.
Piketberg continued with their impressive run of form after the holiday to come away from their visit to Hoërskool Vredendal with a 34-24 win, to back up their 32-10 triumph over Augsburg Gimnasium last week.
Despite a hattrick by the home team’s lively scrumhalf, Thydrin Lott, and a perfect day with the boot for their vice-captain and flyhalf, Derrick van der Westhuizen, Vredendal could not contain the visitors.
Piketberg’s relentless pressure led to five tries and a penalty try, with Zack Caldo (prop), André Visagie (flanker), Jacques Loubsher (flanker), AJ George (winger) and Erasmus Mouton (hooker) all getting over the line.
Charlie Hofmeyr steamed by Hermanus, beating them 36-13 thanks to the accuracy of their fullback, Lawrence Jantjies, off the kicking tee.
Jantjies converted two of Charlies’ tries and slotted four penalties for a total of 14 points.
Charlie Hofmeyr were without their star flyhalf, Luan Giliomee, who is on his way to Trinidad and Tobago where he will be competing at the Commonwealth Youth Games as part of the SA U18 Sevens team. That tournament kicks off on Sunday, the 6th of August, when South Africa plays Jamaica in their first game before facing the hosts in the final match of the day.
Langenhoven Gimnasium saw away with Montagu by 38-7. Their flyhalf, Natayniel Fillies, and left-winger, Sinclair Lottering, each scored twice to help their team get the victory away from home.
Paulus Joubert hosted George Watson High from England earlier in the week, narrowly losing out to the visitors by 12-10.
Wynberg Boys’ High versus Paul Roos, Strand versus Parel Vallei, Vredendal Secondary versus Cederberg Academy, Hoërskool Punt versus Bredasdorp and Robertson versus Overberg were some of the fixtures to fall victim to the weather this weekend.
