St Anne’s to make rugby debut at Fichardtpark’s Nashua Sports Day
Fichardtpark’s Nashua Sports Day will see 21 schools’ first rugby teams meet in Bloemfontein on Saturday, the 4th of March, in what has grown to be the biggest school sporting event of its kind.
Kalahari High School, from Kuruman, travel to meet Frankfort’s Wilgerivier.
For the players, parents and coaching staff of Kalahari, however, the occasion is overshadowed by the tragic loss of their beloved headmaster, Mr. Freek van Rooyen, on Tuesday, 28 February.
Our thoughts are with them at this time.
Louis Botha face Hentie Cilliers, with both teams suffering defeats in their opening games of the season at the President Steyn Sports Day last weekend.
Louis Botha has still recently been producing the likes of Joseph Dweba, Ox Nché, Oupa Mohoje, Raymond Rhule, Daan Human and AJ Venter and will want to turn their season around after suffering a demoralising loss at the hands of Grey’s second team in their opener.
On the other hand, Hentie Cilliers will feel like they let the opportunity to beat JF slip last week as handling errors and confusion in the lineouts cost them dearly.
That said, these elements can be improved on and it will be interesting to see whether they can avoid repeating those same mistakes after benefitting from another week’s training.
This Saturday will also allow St Anne’s Technical High School to make their debut against Sand du Plessis.
With the school only opening in 2018, having only 400 students enrolled the high school, and rugby only being offered as an extracurricular for the boys since 2022, this will be a very inexperienced group.
With the guidance of head coach, Mr Nakedi, however, St Anne’s will be competing in the Sandveld league this year and we look forward to watching the boys from Virginia progress.
Morné Steyn is arguably Sand du Plessis’ best-known rugby export, along with Dawie Theron and Franco Smith.
Bloemfontein’s St Andrews and Aliwal-Noord from the Eastern Cape will face each other in the opening match and will look to provide an exciting start to the day.
