Western Province aims to bag third consecutive title

NewsG PaarlBoishaaiWestern Province will atttempt to complete a hat-trick of titles at the annual SARU u17 Interprovincial Sevens tournament which will kick-off tomorrow at Durban High School in Durban. Durban High School is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year.

Western Province has SA Schools’ winger Muller du Plessis in their midst. Du Plessis was the top try scorer at last year’s tournament in Stellenbosch. WP is lead by Francke Horn who got a call up to the SA Schools A-side this year. He played a major role in Western Province’s unbeaten record at this year’s Academy Week in Durban.

Western Province most difficult assignment in their pool will be the match against Free State. They will also face Griqualand West and Namibia in their other pool matches.

Interesting is that nine of Western Province’s 12 players tot the tournament comes from “Boland” schools Paarl Boys’ High, Paarl Gimnasium, Boland Landbou (all Paarl) and Paul Roos Gimnasium (Stellenbosch). This would not have caused any eyebrows to lift, but in Boland also included a player, Le Roux Kloppers from Stellenbosch.

The four top “Boland” schools have been the backbone of Western Province Coca Cola Craven Week teams since forever, but it is interresting to see that another school from the same town are allowed to play for another province.

The Blue Bulls, Boland, Valke and Golden Lions will also be strong contenders to be crowned champions in Durban.

The Pools:
