Well-rounded Jeppe sink Potch Volkies
A well-rounded team performance from Jeppe High School for Boys secured them a significant victory over Potchefstroom Volkskool on Sunday in Johannesburg.
Kai van Aardt led the charge with the bat for the hosts, who took to the crease first. Opening the innings, he top-scored with a mature 51 from 77 deliveries.
After Jeppe’s openers had laid a solid foundation, with a well-constructed stand of 82 runs, Ryan Harcourt-Baldwin (36) and Ryan Young (35) weighed in with further valuable contributions.
With five batsmen making 20 or more, Jeppe totalled 220/7 after their 50 overs.
Eduan van der Merwe led the Volkies’ attack, picking up 2/33, while Devan Oberholzer also enjoyed success, capturing 2/37.
When they began their reply, the Potchefstroom batsmen soon realised it was going to a challenging day out in the middle. Christoper Elston made big inroads for Jeppe, returning the impressive figures of three wickets for 20 runs, while Harcourt-Baldwin followed up on his good innings with a haul of 3/25.
Volkies’ experienced campaigner, Berno de Klerk, led a short-lived fight back, contributing 24 runs, while Eduan van der Merwe grafted hard for his 20.
However, sustained pressure from the Jeppe bowlers took its toll, leading to Volkies losing wickets in clusters. Shreshth Kumar (2/30) struck the final blow as the side from the North West suffered a heavy 109-run defeat after being bundled out for a disappointing 111.
Summarised scorecard:
Jeppe Boys’ 220/7 (Kai van Aardt 51, Ryan Harcourt-Baldwin 36, Ryan Young 35, Munib Ayob 28, Tiago Almeida 21; Eduan van der Merwe 2/33, Devan Oberholzer 2/37); Potchefstroom Volkskool 111 (Berno de Klerk 24, Eduan van der Merwe 20; Christopher Enslin 3/20, Ryan Harcourt-Baldwin 3/25, Shrehth Kumar 2/30).
