Schools Representation in the Absa Currie Cup
Grey College of Bloemfontein, Paarl Gimnasium and Affies of Pretoria are the three schools with the most representation under the Absa Currie Cup players after the first two weeks of the 2013 edition of the tournament.
Grey College of Bloemfontein is leading the charge and honouring their legacy with 16 old-boys who have played a part in the first two weeks of the tournament. One old boys Marcel van der Merwe also played for Paarl Boys’ High’s first XV before moving to Bloemfontein. The school from the City of Roses is also the only school with a player in each of the six provinces.
If taken into consideration that Springboks Jannie du Plessis, Flip van der Merwe, Bismarck du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss, Ruan Pienaar, Coenie Oosthuizen and Jan Serfontein also went to Grey College the school is truly South Africa’s premier rugby school.
Paarl Gimnasium is ranked second with ten former pupils in the Currie Cup thus far. Griqualand West have the most players from Paarl Gimnasium with captain Ryno Barnes, Lourens Adriaanse and Marnus Hugo all being former pupils from Paarl Gimnasium. Barnes also had a stint at DF Malan.
Affies have seven representatives. It is interesting that three of the four top ranked school teams of 2013 are also the three schools with the most players so far in the Absa Currie Cup.
An interesting school on the list is Standerton who has three former pupils Jaco Kriel (Lions), Gary van Aswegen (Western Province) and Howard Mnisi (Griqualand West) in the competition. All three of them played for Standerton’s first XV in 2007. Mnisi and Kriel also played for the Pumas at the Coca-Cola Craven Week that year in Stellenbosch. Van Aswegen played at the Coca-Cola Craven Week in Pretoria in 2008.
Four players have sat on the bench during the first two weeks and didn’t get some playing time. They are Joubert Engelbrecht (Upington HS), Willie du Plessis (Affies), Du Randt Gerber (Outeniqua) and Ross Geldenhuys (St. Andrew’s College).
