School Rugby to resume as Department of Education announces amendment to regulations
School Sports is back!
The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, published the amendments in the latest Government Gazette that state that schools sport could resume with immediate effect. Sport on school level is still subject to strict regulations regarding social distancing, hygiene, and safety measures on Covid-19 as contemplated in the directions published.
Schools will re-start their training sessions on Monday and most will be able to play their first matches on the 25th of August. The South African Schools Rugby Association (SASRA) announced on Friday that if a school did continue with their fitness and strength training after the suspension of contact sport earlier this they will be able to return to play by this date.
These schools will be required to move into two weeks on focussed contact training and then also a normal week of training before fronting up for their first match. If a school stopped all training they will have to follow a return to play program of two weeks of fitness and strength training, another two weeks of contact training before moving into a final week of normal training.
This means that these schools would only be allowed to return to play by the 11th of September.
All of these sports and cultural activities will like before continue without any spectators. The good news is however that some of the big interschools could still take place like the Paarl Interschools, Grey College vs Paul Roos as well as the Virsekerbeker. Schools will without a doubt announce their plans to get in as many matches as possible before the summer sport season starts.
Contact sport was suspended for the second time since the start of the pandemic on 19 May 2021.
SASRA also announced that the Craven Week for High Schools (u18) will be hosted during the October holidays. It will take place from 3 to 9 October and will be sponsored and managed by SA Rugby.
“SASRA is very aware that this is a critical time of the year for matric pupils. The pupils will be in between trial examinations and finals. Hence the early decision to allow for responsible academic preparation. SASRA will facilitate opportunities for players to partake in supervised academic activities at night and on off days,” states the release by Noel Ingle, chairman of SASRA.
The Grant Khomo Week will also take place, but will not the sponsored by SA Rugby. The various high school associations indicated that they will host two regional weeks to provide these kids with an opportunity to play at a higher level.
