Paul Roos to keep SA flag flying high in Japan
Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch will kick off their campaign at the international Sanix Tournament on 29 April in Japan with a clash Higashi Fukuoka HS of the hosting nation. The team from the Eikestad was South Africa’s representative at the inaugural Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament back in 2000. They lost against The King’s School of Parramatta in Australia in that year’s final.
Paul Roos is celebrating their 150th birthday this year. Enisei-STM of Russia and Ryutsu Keizai University/Kashiwa HS is the other two teams that Paul Roos will meet in Pool A. The referee in charge of last year’s Coca Cola Craven Week final, Oregopotse Rametsi, will also be in action at the tournament.
Three South African sides managed to be crowned champions of this international tournament. Grey College of Bloemfontein was the first to achieve this in 2002. Boland Landbou of the Paarl was crowned champions the following year. Glenwood of Durban won the 2008 edition of the tournament, while Paarl Boys’ High came close last year. They lost against Hamilton Boys’ High of New Zealand in the final.
